Performances by the Halcyon Duo rate in town as 'Not-To-Be Missed', and no wonder! Fiery virtuosity and melting lyricism, raves the director of SummerKeys annual concert series. This husband-and-wife flute and piano duo is noted for its stunning ensemble work and 'powerful interpretations' (director of Trinity Center concert series). Their vast repertoire reaches from the Baroque to cutting-edge avant-garde compositions, including the award-winning works of the duo's pianist, Roberto Pace.
The Halcyon Duo specializes in making classical music, especially modern and contemporary works, accessible to all audiences. From the stage, the duo speaks easily and informatively-- active curators of the programs they present.
Halcyon derives from the mythological bird (associated with the kingfisher) who brings calm seas, peace and prosperity during the winter solstice. Roberto Pace and Eve Friedman were born during the winter and summer solstices, respectively, and their last names both mean peace. They have been performing together since meeting in Lenox, Massachusetts in the summer of 1999. Each summer they perform and teach in Maine at the Summerkeys festival. Since the summer of 2003 they have been invited regularly to perform at the festival Incontri di Canna in Calabria, Italy.
